It seems quite easy to pick up a camera, press on the aperture, and capture a moment. However, analogue cameras encapsulate a level of unknown and uncertainty, especially for a novice like myself, that overwhelms every shutter close. I think that it’s this state of suspense that holds the magic and lure of film photography. It is this state that drew me into embarking on this learning adventure.
I have owned film cameras before, but every exposure that I developed felt steeped in luck. Now when I step behind the lens there is intention and purpose to my actions. There is a drive to learn the trade, to intertwine that magic and lure with knowledge and understanding. I’ll be using several camera bodies and lenses throughout this journey, starting with my Grandpa’s Asahi Pentax ESII. And so, I turned to the manual.
Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
- The battery powered TTL meter reading only works on Automatic
- Diaphragm setting (f stop)
- Fine weather: f/8-f/11
- Cloudy weather: f/4-f/5.6
- Indoor: f/2-f/2.8
- The camera should be held more firmly in the left hand than right
Now it’s time to start shooting! The adventure continues…

I love that you are trying out different equipment throughout this process. Definitely seems like so much to learn with all those settings and choices!
